I grow a photo period variety with lights on at 18/6 never reducing the on time. Would the plant stay in vegetative mode and continue to grow really tall indefinatly? Then reduce the on time?
An uneducated guess… yes. It’d be cool to know what the limiting factors are.
That’s would work quite well. I do that with mine though I take cuttings and clone mine once or twice before I allow the “Mothers” to finish.
Just leaving her in veg state can be difficult with pathogens and bugs Remember to leave some headroom for them to stretch before flowering.
Damn interesting!!! … what if you had it planted in a 100 gallon planter in a room with 10 ft. ceilings, massive lights, do some major flattening with LST and super cropping and then vegged it for 2 years…
Would it get humongous?
Or can the plant not live that long? Does the constant vegging already happen at the equator? Do days always stay longer than 12 hours.
I’d love to see that happen as an experiment.
Theoretically you can keep a plant in veg forever. I forget how long it takes, but I’ve read that after so long if you flowered it the buds would be weak and low quality all around. You could veg a plant until it was absolutely huge.
The size of a small tree???
I had 2 plants i vegged for nearly 5 months. Then flipped em when i had autos that were done. They had massive stalks. I had limited height so i cropped twice. They did great.
I’ve seen some that big grown normally outside. Do a search for huge cannabis plants and see what you get. Imagine if you had the genetics of some of those plants, plenty of light and vegged them for a year or so.
That is why they are called photoperiod. They respond to the amount of darkness. If the dark period isn’t long enough it will not flower. It may time out for other reasons but it will not flower.
Don’t they grow indefinitely tall outdoors? They would stay in veg but if indoors, wouldn’t they only grow as tall as your space allows? If you have heaps of space I say do it. I’m there for it. I like experimental growing too. If you have the space, I would be interested to see if you could train her to use up the floor space and then let her grow up but keep her in veg until you’ve only got enough vertical space left to flower her.
I don’t grow out doors. You can find massive plants grown in greenhouses, hoop structures etc. I think the largest plants I have seen by a grower indoors on this site is @Cannabian in a attached greenhouse.
I have done a few atypical grows but went the opposite direction. I have fun with clones, smaller pots and plants that are pruned for the intended purpose.
Cannabis can easily hit 20 feet depending on the strain. Unfortunately, the branch unions dont do well with excessive weight and tend to break off. This means that the plants need constant structural reinforcement after about 10 feet or so. I have had Himalayan strains, namely Johaar, grow 20 plus feet in the greenhouse. The other issue is you trade height and branch growth for tops. My plants routinely hit 12 feet tall and easily the same wide. I could actually increase my bud yield with more focused training. The key to large plants is root mass and the larger the area the root covers, the more water, mineral, carbon and nutrients it can grab.
Here is a picture of the Cali boys growing some good sized plants.
Here is a plant I grew a couple seasons ago that my friends want their picture taken with

These are still in veg.
Loving your pics mate cheers
Holy F Nice
Thinking about this today. Would you start at seedling stage? Encourage a tall seedling maybe in a bigger space than we would normally use. I let this girl go outside on my patio (inner city high rise), so she feels unrestricted getting heaps of sun, and medium winds. She’s now about 20cm and unsupported. (On the left).
