Where to check trichomes?

Dumb question but which part of the bud do I check trichomes to know when it’s ready to harvest? Do i just put my microscope right on top or should I cracked a bud open to look inside

I usually check the trichomes on one of the buds from the middle of the plant. Make sure you look at a part of the actual bud, not the leaves. Depending on what kind of microscope you have, it might be easier to cut a piece of the bud and view on a table.
