What is topping? Do I need to?

I have read that people do topping but I’m new and this is a new term so trying to figure out if it’s something I need to conquer next lol . What is this and when does it need to be done? Im thinking I’m close to flipping the lights to flower just waiting for one plant to grow a bit more.

It is the process of removing the top stem and allow the two side branches at the next node down to become to new top.

I would top yours yes, it will help keep shorter plants so you can get your light closer.

How often does this need to be done?

How many times is it needed

Thats up to you big daddy. If you top, allow em a few days to recover though. If youre fixing to flip, id top em once, give em week, then flip away

Be careful topping autoflower plants. You don’t know when they might start flowering.

I probably would have put it at the top of the list when growing indoors. The answer, in my book, is yes. Just imagine what your single stemmed plants will look like in another month or two. Tall, primarily single colas plants with mostly larfy airy buds on the bottom 2/3 - 3/4 of the plant.
My first resource for all things cannabis is growweedeasy DOT com. It is a great source of solid information. Google growweedeasy topping and you will find a bunch of articles that describes and illustrates the process and the benefit.
Topping is only one aspect. You also have to learn low stress training (LST) to take full advantage of topping.
Two recent plants

As @MidwestGuy says - generally not for autos until you gain some experience growing them. This is my second recommendation - grow photoperiod strains. Much more rewarding and far less heartache.

First time grower and read auto flower was easier but my next group of seeds will be photo. I had no idea that was even a thing until now. :person_facepalming: Learn something new everyday and something to add to the list of things to change for the next group.

Sooo you said you were thinking you needed to flip the plants into flower on your first post so I assumed they were not autos…
you can top autos, some people love it some people hate it, I don’t like the growth structure after topping autos.
I think you’re to late to top.

Autos are not easier than photos, and in most situations more difficult, more sensitive, harder to achieve dense flowers, when things go bad it significantly impacts yield.

You need to move your light closer to the plant they are begging for more light, how many hours are you running a day?

I started with autos. Many do. As autos-only said, some growers love them, other don’t. Once I figured out even I can change light hours from 18 to 12, I changed to photoperiod plants and have not looked back.
It does not look like any of your autos are starting to flower. I also would not risk topping them at this stage (unless the little one is much younger). The next best thing to manage height and try to get a better canopy with more even light distribution is to supercrop the main stem. Again, check out growweedeasy.

Welcome to the community , I top all my plants one time photos an autos . slows down the upward growth Let’s side branches catch up and make a nice bush plant . simply remove (snip) the last growth. If you choose not to top you’re going to end up with more like a christmas tree plant. Good luck

18/6 they are 18" away which is what I was told they needed :person_facepalming: lol see so many different ways so with autos I don’t flip first I wait for them to tell me? What would one starting to flower look like because I have white hairs all over the 2 bigger ones

18 / 6 light schedule will be the best to finish your auto plants . Autos flower between 4 to 7 weeks You will not need to change light schedule. If they have white hairs they are already starting to flower.

My assumption also. BuT are you in preflower @Catdaddycox i swear i see pistils on one plant… if you are preflowering, i wouldnt top all all… since its an auto, a little light LST if in preflower and thats all i would do.
