What is the perfect ratio of nutrients for hydroponics?

A question from a fellow grower:

I am new to hydroponics and I was wondering what the perfect ratio of nutrients is for hydroponics. I’m actually growing Big Bud. I really need this to work. I have General Hydroponics Floraduo. I’m used them in a ratio of 3-1 and the ph is perfect at 6.0. I’m using five gallon buckets.

Bottle A- 5-0-6
Bottle B- 1-5-4

Am I using the proper nutrients and I’m using rockwool. Also how long should I wait in between switching the water.

I have a RDWC and use the GH Nutes. I change after 10 days if not consumed but usually need to just refill the reservoir. You should run an air stone or power head in the reservoir to keep the nutes from clumping. Your PH should be 5.5 for hydro (sweet spot) so you may need some PH down. Lastly, you need to use CaliMag if using RO water.

  • between 5.5 and 5.8 perfect
  • between 5.3 and 6.5 good
  • between 5.0 and 7.0 acceptable
  • below 4.5 and above 8.0 disrupted absorption of nutrients
  • below 3.5 and above 9.0 irreversible damage to the roots
