Well after 2+ days of trimming (didn’t have time to make it quicker), I’m finally done trimming. Actually I got tired of it. So I cut all or most of the fan leaves off the rest of the two plants and decided to cut the rest of the plants off and hang the plants. How has this worked for you all, I’m sure there is some of you that chop the whole plant and hang it. Tell me what advantages and disadvantages you have noticed, please. Here’s my gals. Each tent has ventilation and ocilating fans.
Leaving leaves on plant will typically just slow the drying down some. Good for a lot of people in dry winter months, not so good when humidity is already higher than desirable.
I do feel you get cleaner cuts with shears when trimming wet, although not everyone agrees. Trying to trim dry allows leaves to crumble more so that cut. Either way is manageable though.
My go to method is to chop it up and hang it. I like the dry and end result way better.
But there are always those cases where you might be forced to cut and hang the entire plant. I had to take this rout this past outdoor season at our home grow. I was letting three of our laddies ride out the weather for an extra week. I had to chop them down within hrs due to a winter hail storm.
With such a large plant sometimes it’s alittle hard to get airflow around all the flowers.
I let them chill like this for a few days tell I had room to hang them up on the trellis.
They are looking nice. I try and start my trim the week of flush. Trimming all the fan leaves and low hanging buds.
You had quite a op going, lol.they look good. Did they come out okay? Really the MAIN thing when plants are drying (chopped down to buds or full plants) is really just adequate airflow and ventilation, correct? Temps and humidity only play factors in what aspect of the drying? Too low temps and low RH, with good ventilation and airflow will result in? Also on the contrary, what will high temps and RH with adequate ventilation and airflow result in?
I harvest about 4-5 pounds per run. I literally cut off what i trim and the plants keep growing the whole time.
After i wet trim a branch, i hang it on an indoor closeline in a room with a dehumidifier at about 50%. I keep track of what gets cut when, and also have a moisture meter. When the buds 5% - about 7% and the stem behind it is about 11% i jar it up to cure.
Id say for the amount of harvest its about a 2 week thing with me taking a week off the day job, and a helper. Trim bucket or something will speed it up, but nothing can compare to a humans hands if you want pure quality.
All those factors just go towards drying time. If you dry too fast you’re bud will taste and smell like hay. Not a good look. In my experience if drying takes a week or more you won’t get that. You don’t want too much airflow when drying and definitely no wind blowing directly on the plants. I put a small fan on low and point it at a bottom corner of the tent I’m drying in. I keep the exhaust on very low just to help with the smell.
The closer you can keep your drying space to 60°/60% RH the better. You can adjust RH between 55-65% to compensate for lower or higher temps to an extent. A longer dry equals a better end product. Some commercial operations dry differently, but home growers typically shoot for that 60/60 for best results.
Sooo that’s where that grassy/ homegrown smell comes from when growing???
I’m probably drying to fast then. I’m out in a garage with a personal heater blowing into the inlet of the ventilation (cheapy from Amazon w/ no specific thermostat, just min and max dial). Then I have a ocilating fans blowing on high or med right below the hanging buds in the small tent, got about 30-40rh and 75°f, way too much, right?
The other tent, with the hanging plants. I have a fan ocilating on low (but still probably too much from what your saying, blowing direct towards plants with probably 60-65°f and 40rh, again too much I’m guessing? I have it blowing directly because my understanding is that mold happens alot quicker or whatnot hanging the plant instead of branches. And my last plant I THOUGHT had mold on it ,lol, so I pitch 99% of it. So I was trying to avoid that depressing situation again. I’m learning a lot from you all.
And so just a small air flow other than the exhaust is adequate, doesn’t need to be a strong breeze?
We do it the same way, Cut a branch and trim, cut a branch and trim, leaving the plant to grow until it’s all cut down. I just got tired of trimming so I figured I’d try something different and see how it goes.
I try to have a fan doing just enough to move the air around and keep it from getting stagnant in the tent. I just finished a nine day, I think, dry. In the real world just make the conditions as good as you can and run with it.
I just finished a 6 day dry. I’m on day 8 of the cure. The percents are just starting to come out the grassy hay smell is starting to subside. I know it’s gonna be a bit longer before it’s gone.
Here’s my dry tent. Plus I have humidifier running in there as well. 60-60 is best if you can stay as close as you can. Cooler is better than warmer. You start to lose potency and trichomes the warmer it is. Also speeds your dry up. Sounds like you’re on the right track just have to tune it
So if I leave buds in jars longer (the longer the better) it (grassy/ Hay smell) will eventually go away, always? I have some boveda 58% humidity packs I put in the jars with the goods. Is that right?
But my main question is , the longer the better when curing?
The longer the better. Some of these guys that take their buds to these cups have been curing for like 6 months or longer. I’ve seen most people cure for about a month at the least before they partake in their flowers. It’s a difficult thing to wait but it is so worth it. It will subside. Just takes curing to get it out. Keep burping. I’ve switched over to the grove bags. Love ‘em
They say 62% is good for joints and 58% good for bowls. That’s a guideline I think. A preference thing I guess. I honestly don’t notice a difference between 58% and 62%. My advice is to take your boveda pack and tape to the inside of your lid so it’s not sitting on your product. Open up and take a big breath and shut it. Make sure you’ve got about 3/4 of the jar full so there is room for the air to move around. Put a hydrometer in each jar if you haven’t already and just watch it. First week or so I would burp at least once a day. You’ll notice the aroma profile of your flowers will begin to start coming out. Patience is best in this part of the grow. It’s hard as hell I know but it’ll be worth the wait! Hope this helps. Happy growing buddy

So I just read something about apple cider vinegar, if drank too much can lower potassium levels in oneself(my question has nothing to do with tht side of it and I don’t drink but a tablespoon a day. Anyways… My question is:
Will using vinegar in the water to drop pH levels for cannabis hurt, rather than help?
I use real lemon juice for fish and baking soda for up. Mist just use ph up and down plant food because after all its plant Food I haven’t had any negative reactions to lemon or baking soda so I’ll continue that cheap way of raising and lowering ph
