The Traveling Grower - The Struggle From the Road

Well I wouldn’t say I have been environmentally sound - been fighting it all winter, but I haven’t let it get too out of whack for too long a period of time, I don’t think. In any case we’ll see how this week pans out. I think I’m going to need to dial back the SSH nutes tomorrow.

My last harvest did this in a few places I figured it was lights being to close or intense but their was nothing I could do so I just harvested when all the buds were ready and ignored the foxtailing everything turned out great I try to time the turning brown of the pistols to my stopping of the nuts

Good morning folks - quick update today as I’m getting ready to hit the road until Thursday for work.

This morning I ended up taking some water out of the Super Silver Haze tote and adding back in plain water so I cloud lower her PPM. I ended up pulling 1.5 gallons and adding plain water back in. PH/PPM is now set at 5.81 and 1240 respectively. I think 1240 sounds about right for her. Her PH before I did that was 5.51. Hmm.

The GL was at 5.95. I topped her off with around a gallon of water today and she is now at 725 ppm, which is right about where I’d like her to be. I’m trying to flirt with 800 on her.

The usual boring pic of the plants today:

So… the foxtailing issue. I have decided to have “why not” moment and, per @donaldj’s statement that it’s possible to “top” a foxtailing bud, I went and did just that:

And now some bonus pics:

Awesome pics! Please keep us posted on that topped bud.

It’s the tallest cola on the plant so I should be able to track it and not forget which one I did it too. Haha! I hope so anyway…

Those tops in front that look a little less developed are the ones under the cobs correct? Any sign they are catching up at all? Did you raise them with the other fixtures responding to the foxtail?

I left the COBs at the same height, didn’t touch them. The issue with a lot of those tops in the front is they are just tertiary “lower” buds - those will end up like golf ball sized I imagine. They don’t have the same structure as the other ones in the back, so I don’t think the light can be attributed to the growth difference so much as me having ended up putting a lot more terminal primary and secondary branches in the back there.

The smaller ones were in fact covered up until a few days ago, if you recall. We’ll see how it plays out but the colas that were already tall like the ones in the back aren’t having the same issue IMHO.

I also think that you are seeing a little bit of an optical illusion due to the angle of the camera.

That’s exactly why I was asking. I would expect you to be able to get those cobs around 12” or so above canopy if hardened properly . But with the other stuff going on, not sure how ideal it is to try pushing them.

I would love to lower the COBs.

Also I had everything in the shopping cart last night to finish the full light fixture… but didn’t pull the trigger. I would like to see if I can find heatsinks cheaper than cobkits has them, but I doubt it… his shipping also comes out to around 35 bucks for 10 heat sinks, COBs, holders and thermal pads.

I think my problem was I lowered the LED panels to the same distance as the COBs.

Just put a loose bread tue around the branch somewhere close to top

Copy that! I’ve been thinking about you moving forward on the rest of them a little.

About the best price I know of was to get from rapidled using the first buyer 10% discount, should make them around $17. The problem is last time I knew their sinks weren’t drilled and tapped for the citi cobs yet. They just recently started carrying the citi line, and said they would have sinks in the future. As a side note, I’m sure mechatronix has something, or even several options. But tracking down what you need and a retailer that has them may be a hassle. I found some at future lighting solutions for some lumileds once if that helps any?

Another possibility may be trying a different cob, like going with a 4x50 watt setup. Or 4x anything really. You’d just be trading a heatsink for more expensive cob though. Could be some value here if you’re wanting to play around with different options. Depending on the person though, a lot of people like uniformity too.

Yeah I’m not in a hurry. But I do want to keep it pretty uniform. I would be willing to use the current rail in the middle with two outside rails that are identical but maybe a little different than the one I have already. Stuff to think about. I’ll scope out some possible configurations I might consider while on the plane today.

There’s definitely plenty of options to throw around. Depending on what you may be interested in, doing something like you said could be a viable option. Or doing another bar like you have on the other edge and trying something different in the middle. On top of several options there, you can look at mixing light spectrums as you stated once before too.

I think the most important aspect will be to continue to watch how your current bar unfolds. And then incorporate anything you like and/or dislike into moving forward.

@Bogleg no such thing as boring weed porn imo

Good morning fellow members of the Worldwide Weed Federation! Let’s get ready to rummmmmblllllllleeeee!

Today marks the 110th day since the seeds sprouted. It is the 48th day since the lights were flipped to 12 hours on and 12 hours off. It is the 32nd day since I first noticed the first signs of flowers.

It sure was nice to open up the tent for the first time in three days and see what is going on with my garden:

I can see added weight all over the place!

Both plants needed a lot of water. I ended up adding 3 gallons to each. I added a nutrient solution today. Per gallon, as usual:

8ml Micro
16ml Bloom
2.5ml CalMag
3ml Koolbloom (Liquid)
6ml Nectar

PPM of the water going in was at 805.

After the top off the GL was at 5.78/830. The SSH was at 5.84/1340.

The “back building/bud stacking” experiment is going okay so far (i.e. nothing died). Here is the “topped” bud as of this morning:

And here it is directly from overhead:

I’m liking the looks of things. The SSH seems to be really adding on weight this week:

She has lots of goodies hiding in the canopy.

Here’s a bunch of bonus pics:

This one is interesting:

I have a few colas that are “stretching” like this. Hopefully those segments will fill out and connect.

Duuuuuuude, duuuuuuuuude
Those girls are gorgeously delicious.
Gonna be a massive harvest bro :money_mouth_face:

Looking great! Can you assimilate those stretching to a particular location in the grow in respect to the lighting?

Yeah that’s in the back directly under one of the King panels.

Ugh… you’ve already tried running those lights lower too if I remember. They can still fill out, hopefully they do.

Have you tried decreasing distance from cobs to canopy any? Assuming plants have grown some, not sure if you’ve been chasing the gap though, or just letting the distance gradually decrease?
