Good evening all guru gents and gals - looking for support in my answer to my bro in law ( a totally new and unsuccessful indoor grower) – I had started my grow with six mini pots of four assorted strains – . Since I only grow 4 plants at a time (misdemeanor in Illinois, more = felony) I gave my bro in law the extra two pots… He has a 900 watt led and I have a 600 watt HID…
The grows couldn’t be any more different – mine are 2’ wide bushes after 1 and half months – his are , while healthy looking, are small and seem stagnant. We use same soil so that is not a question, but the temps at nite and days for him and I are different. His are mid 60s nite / high 70s day. While mine are 70 nite / 80-82 days and humidity at 50%.
Can you all confirm his overall temps are way too low – if he sees it in print he’ll believe… I’ve told him countless times to come here for the best advice but to know avail…
The plants will survive at the 75/65 range. A little higher would be better. I think there is more going on than a couple of degrees in temp different. Water pH and nutrient schedule are more likely to have an impact like that.
I’m not sure it’s the temps. I grow at pretty low temps and my plants grow huge. I think it’s most likely nutrients or Ph. There’s really nothing wrong with the 60-70 temperature range.
assuming that this is measured at the top of the canopy… his temps r great.!!
i agree with Raustin, 60-80 is the proper ‘window’,
at night they slow down so the lower night temps do not affect them much at all,
the closer u keep it to 80 with lights on the faster they will grow, but 70+ is great,
there is minimal growth difference between 70 and 80 during lights on.
the size and health difference is due to many other variables…
light, fert’s, feeding ‘schedule’, pH, air flow (circulation and ventilation), training methods…
His and my soil / water source same – so nutes not a factor as I can see as well as ph, as with feeding it has been my experience (growing inside) that the soil should have enough nutes to carry it to flower - then is when I start feeding the flowers . I usually walk in a 5’ x 6’ room with wall to wall bud at harvest time…
His lite is better than mine, ventilation not a problem either – all I can see is his temps are way different than mine – with him using an led his rm doesn’t have that warm summer feel to it like mine - but on the cool side.
what lights r y’all using.?
what distances do y’all maintain in veg and flower.?
this may be the biggest cause, if he is watering/feeding too soon or too late the plants will be different,
I’d bet the lights and training has some to contribute also.!
until he gets below 60 at night and not getting to 70 during the ‘day’ the temps r not the problem.!
i have grown in nearly every bad condition possible, i know what temps do to plants.!!!
Hey sorry for the late response – but to answer your questions – mine is a 600 W metal halide - his 900 W LED – I usually keep mine at 12 to 18 " from plants…
I’ve advised him on how I grow with my setup – maybe there’s something to growing under a led lite. Mine are just over 2 mos old and four plants are now almost filling a 30 sq ft grow tent - waitin just a little longer before puttin to flower.
But his are nowhere near mine and they are the same age and all since I started them for him - !
this would make a huge difference,
his ‘900w’ LED is probably a Blurple LED and no where near 900 actual watts, closer to 200w.!!
u have 2 - 3 times the light he has.!
a 600w HID at 18" above the plants is a rocking F’n light.!!
i would advise him to try 3 of the HLG 135w QB’s, then u would be jealous.! lol
Thanks for the advice OldGuy – never heard of a Blurple – can you elaborate please? – yea my little setup is cool as all shit – all in flower now – goin into 3rd week, can’t wait for new harvest, smokin my last ounce of Strawberry Ice. I will inform my bro in law of his possible dilemma — and of your advice on upgrade…
A blurple is a generic Amazon LED light, typically boasting a “high wattage equivalency” based on the number of chips it has and claiming a certain equivalency to HPS and MH lamps. If you take a picture of your plants under it, it has a blue/purple look to it.
Many of us bought them because the price and advertising are attractive, and didn’t know that higher quality products are out there. I’ve moved mostly to QBs, with my blurple still in operation in parallel with a 240W QB setup.
