I’m using a hlg 135w rspec not sure how close is too close, too far away? Also, I know which screw to adjust the intensity but have not used it yet so it is still at factory output setting so my second question is which direction decreases and vice versa? What is the best setup for sprouts @dbrn32 please?
24-30 inches. And around half power would work. I watch how my seedlings are adjusting to the light then adjust my light from there. Dbrn will be on later and May can give you a better answer.
I agree, would shoot for around 2’ at 50% output. If looking at faceplate of driver, turning io pot to right will increase current and turning it to the left will decrease current.
@dbrn32 simular ? Would a HLG 65 do as good or better than my HLG 260xl turned all the way down for seedling thru a little after early veg??? Then switch to the 260???
I’m not near as knowledgeable about lights as @dbrn32 but I believe the 260 turns down to using 60 watts from the wall? May not be 100% accurate. But either way if it’s too much light at lowest power I would raise it before I would switch out lights mid grow. Just my 2 cents! Good luck
You could use hlg-65 for starting seeds no problem.
At what point do you think it should be replaced with the 260??
It could be replaced at any time. The hlg-65 is good to veg up to 2x2 space on 18 hours schedule, if you need more than that I would say you can move to bigger light.
I wondered if it would do better than the 260 dimmed to min. Just up to after transplant
The potentiometer screw does not have any indicators to gauge the output %. Turning it as low as possible will of course be more than 0% but it’s been difficult to get a decent idea from hlg site what the output range is with the voltage untouched at factory default.
Slap a kill-a-watt monitor on there, it’ll tell you the watts the light is pulling from the wall. I have them on all my lights so I can dial in the exact watts I want.
I don’t know that there is a default on vo pot. I have seen them come several different ways from factory. As far as io pot all the way down should be about 50% nameplate current and all the way up should be slightly over 100% nameplate current.
If you want to know exactly what power consumption is i would do what Hellraiser suggested.
Download photone app, get a price of paper it will tell you what your DLI is and increase, decrease the knob tell u get the numbers wanted
Thank you both. I’m limited to guessing for now. I have it at 24" but I think I had it probably closer to 75% but after seeing lopsided growth on my 3 week old and reading light too strong can make plants grow weird I decided to dim it all the way down.
Sorry, I’m new it helped me, bummer, listen to others then they will not steer u wrong, good luck happy growing
Good call, see how that does.
I bought a Kill-A-Watt meter and LUX meter and they have REALLY helped me. This is my 1st indoor grow also. Wasn’t too expensive either.
