I want to start a seed collection to have on hand . How long will seeds stay viable for and how do you all store them
Alot of people will store their seeds in a refrigerator but you have to understand that if they would ever return back to room temperature before being germinated it will most likely destroy them.
I just keep mine in a cool dark place with low humidity in an air tight container.
I freeze mine for years at a time. Wrap them well. In Jorge Cervantes book the Cannibis Encyclopedia he stated the skunk #1 seeds he used in a outdoor greenhouse experiment were frozen and 16 years old.
I’ve grown seeds I collected for decades from bags…I kept them in a baggy inside an old pill bottle like a large white aspirin bottle…kept in a drawer at cooler temps…Worked great.
I store them in an old Rx bottle with a screw on lid. It’s in the door of the fridge. I expect them to last years.
Just be careful because if the door is ever left open by accident or if there’s a power loss and the temperature rises they will be a gonner. I thought about doing this but if one of these were to happen, well…
I would think stored like you have them in that bottle that you could just store them in your basement on or near the cold concrete floor.
