Regular seeds and cloning

If I clone a plant, can I put in 12/12 right away to determine sex, or do I have to give it a couple weeks to root before switching to 12/12?

If you clone you should already know what sex of plant is however if your cloning a veg plant and your clones big enough you could throw it into flower to get a small sample early of what your growing

I’ve heard of people cloning plants they aren’t sure of the sex and flowering that clone to determine the sex of the plant. But I’m not sue if they put the clones in 12/12 right away or wait a couple weeks for them to root. I feel like if I have to wait a couple week before I switch them, then it’ll kinda be a waste of time lol

You can straight away , that’s what I did a few years ago and it saved me from going the whole way cause it was a boy

How old is your mother plant?

You want to let the clone root first, in the typical manner, before putting under 12/12 to determine sex. My clones under 12/12 to determine sex on a bag seeds wilted and died before they ever grew roots. I ended up flowering the plant in question before I got clones to seed under 12/12. It will take a little longer, but I had more consistent results rooting them first.

Really depends on if your wanting to keep the clone, or just take a cutting to sex it. If you just want to sex from a cutting, you can usually just put in a jar of ph’d water and put into 12/12 if mother is mature enough.

I don’t have a mother plant. I have 1 or 2 plants that I suspect might be male. So I was thinking about cloning them and flowering the clones, just to determine sex. I don’t want to have to keep big pots in my garden if they’re gonna be male. But these plants are almost 2 months.

That’s exactly what I would be doing. Just to determine sex. I have enough plants. I don’t really need to clone them.

Plenty old enough. Take couple of cuttings and try dropping in cups of water under 12/12 like I suggested above. They should show before you have issues

I’ll probably just let the plants continue as they are and wait to determine sex. If I clone them, wait a couple weeks to root, then flower them and wait another couple weeks to show sex, I’m thinking the plant in question will probably already be showing sex by then.

Okay thanks! I’ll probably try that. I have a 5 gal bucket I’m using as a breeding station. A male from an unknown strain I had last year that I’m gonna cross with a female Jäger OG. I might stick them in with those 2 since it’s already set to 12/12.

Do I need to add any rooting hormone to the water to keep them alive long enough to show sex?

You don’t really want it to produce roots. It shouldn’t need any nutrients, but a couple hundred ppm of base nutes probably wouldn’t hurt.

Oh, well I already added the rooting hormone. That’s okay, I can always change the water. And my tap water here comes out at about 220 ppm.

It should be fine
