You don’t necessarily need a tent. I feel like you would be disappointed moving from hps to inexpensive led setup. If you were going to make the moves to leds hoping to increase your yeilds, I would shoot for something like hlg-300 or equivalent. Last I checked they are about $400, little cheaper with active discount code.

Do you think I’d be better off upgrading to 600W or 1000W HPS?
600 does really well in 3x3 if you can manage canopy temps. You would probably have to go with air cooled hood, and I don’t know of that would be much cheaper than light i mentioned above.
To accomplish your goals I’d recommend a cheap tent (for light control), some photo period seeds, one plant per pot, probably 4 plants or less for your space, train them to fill the space. Take control of your grow area. Yield will be determined largely by how you train and when you flip to 1212 lighting.
