Morning all,
First timer here. Reading the germination directions here and on some other sites, I dropped a seed in a small container of room temperature water to germinate. I did read on another site that if the seed sinks, it is good and if it floats it is most likely bad. Is this true? I only tried one seed (Banana Kush) and it has been floating for over 12 hours. Just wondering if that is a correct gauge on a seeds health or not.
thanks,
scott
Since already in add a spritz of peroxide. Put in warm cabinet. You will see a tail tomorrow. Will then just plant it. Easy peasy
Some seeds float for a little bit then sink so dont go throwing out floating seeds not unless they have been floating for two days
One of the best methods i have found is the cotton pad method you get make up removel pads just the cotton pads place one or two on a plate then spray them down until damp place ur seeds on the pads grab two more pads placing them on top of the seeds and spray with water until damp cover with plastic wrap and put two small holes in wrap then place the plate into a warm dark place in 12-24 hours ur seeds should be popped
Sinking and floating have no bearing on viability. Its just one of those things people have said. I have had them sprout and they never sank ever.
I soak them overnight then plant them in the soil. Using an old pill container with maybe a teaspoon of water, all you need to do is activate it. Once it senses enough water to start growing it wont stop or die unless you leave it out of a wet environment completely ignoring it.

Welcome! You’ll get the best help here!
I’m new too- and also soak all my seeds for 12 hours and then plant directly in their medium I plan on growing them in for their life. I read about seeds sinking/not sinking and that being a predictor of health. Thus far, mine have never and always sprouted (except the two I drowned) - exactly what @Spiney_norman said
Best of luck!!
Thanks all! I appreciate the answers.
agreed! It seems totally random, I think most of mine stay floating the whole time…even after they have a tail
everyone has their own way to do it. I put my seed directly in their forever pot. Never a problem…so far
Welcome to the community ! Place the seeds in a cup of warm room temperature water for 24 hours an move to the damp paper towel method. Clam shell between two Coffee cup saucer. Keep the towels moist and damp not standing in water. Should have nice sprouts within 2 days. I have been germinating seeds like this since the early eighties. Some will sink some will not no big deal. Good luck
welcome to the community
I did this exact and 4 days nothing so far… well one started 2 days ago then stopped? Then I went to check on it and dropped it into the 70s shag carpet… hopefully the other pops
Give it a little push under. What I ended up doing. Dropped 5, 1 somewhat sank, other 4 didnt. 24 hrs later, all floating on top. Nudged them all a few times until they stopped floating back up. Next day 4 cracked with tails. Placed the 5th in a paper towel and 48 hrs later it was ready as well. I’ve tossed pale, weak, premature looking bag seeds straight in the dirt and they grow and have had solid, tiger stripped seeds dud out.
I’ve not had a single seed sink.
Simply put seed in warm water put on at least 75 degrees on a wifi box or seed pad. push seed to bottom if floats next day try again and remove after 24 hours. Place between a folded non bleached paper towel and let sit for a couple of days. If you are having a hard time germinating try a little scarifying.
after a day in water and then on towels i checked just now and a tail broke through the shell so looks good.
thanks again!
neither have i lol
