Question about this soil

I was looking at local stores and saw this soil pop up. It looks relatively mild and has all the ingredients I would need from start to finish with some added nutes in between. The pH ranges from 5.8 to 7.5. is this a good medium

It’s best to stick with soils intended for cannabis as they are pH buffered specifically for weed. Definitely stay away from any soil that says “moisture retention” or “feeds for x months.”

That’s what this seems like. No moisture control or anything. This seems perfect for marijuana but I can’t tell if it’s too good to be true

Whats your budget? If you want a cannabis friend soil, look at Coast of Maine Stonington Blend, Sohum, indicanja, or similar

The big thing you want in a cannabis friendly soil is correct PH. Most of these generic soils do not buffer to the range needed and will cause problems as your grow progresses.

It does contain dolomite and shells to buffer / adjust ph. Buy a bag and do a soil slurry test to confirm the soils PH. If it is within a .01 or .02 of 6.5, give it a try.
PH will be less important if it is being used to a amend outdoor soil to grow in outdoors.

Hopefully cause it suggests a pretty wide range. Am I able to adjust it with additives before potting it in a pot?

A wide range is not desirable. You want a narrow range; a product that is pH buffered for the narrow range necessary for healthy cannabis (6.3 to 6.8.) A wide range leaves too much room for ventures outside of that range. In such a soil you may struggle to manage pH throughout the grow.

That’s the only thing I worry about. It says 5 8 to 7.5. once I test it, could I adjust it with additives afterwards if needed?

You’ll do a whole lot less adjusting and save yourself a whole lot of frustration if you start out with a proper soil to begin with.

Very true. Availability is just horrible here in Hawaii is all. Cheapest I found happy frog is $36 from Ebay. Apparently only Ocean Forest is stocked locally

A good cannabis soil. Use that.

$36 is a gram or 2 of weed. I would spend the money.

I recently switched to BioBizz Light Mix (.04-0-0) because my hydro store was out of my usual soil. I’ve used Fox Farm Ocean Forest, and changed Roots Organics 707 because FFOF is hot stuff. But, the unintentional switch to (currently) BioBizz has given me far more growth than the other 2. It is also the cheapest. A 1.5cuft bag cost me like $22.

This is a 26 day old Yeti Wedding Auto by @Graysin Farms, in a 5 gallon bag with BioBizz Light Mix…

I’ve heard mixed reviews about Roots. But locally I can get FFOF for $22. But I’m just looking for a slightly less hot for the beginning stages

Most seedling soils you can get in hardware stores and whatnot are light on nutrients and won’t burn your plant. You won’t have to worry too much about pH if it is a decent seedling soil for a couple of weeks. The Fox Farm version of this is Strawberry Fields. Once your plant is a few weeks old it will be able to withstand the “hotness” of Ocean Forest. Again, stay away from any soil that says “Moisture control” or “Feeds for x weeks.” These are extremely poor soils for cannabis.

Okay cool. I didn’t think about just a regular seedling soil. I found one in home Depot. It doesn’t list any chemical facts but I can’t imagine it’s crazy

I’m not aware of that/what products in particular, but I and many growers here have successfully used Roots Original soil, if you can get it in HI and want to give it a try. It’s seedling-friendly, too, I even germinate my seeds in it.

But sounds like FFOF’s availability and price point is good for your needs. MidwestGuy has good advice:
