My tap water is usually 200 ppm. Except a day after heavy rain. Then it can go up to 400. Before I watched the ProMix video, I didn’t pre wet the pots. I never had an issue that way, either.
All good to know many thanks. Now I’m wondering about spraying the baby’s in the humid dome. Still have a few helmet heads and 2 or 3 no helmets but haven’t fully opened up yet. 7" dome with a small t5 light that sits on top. Is it ok to mist the kids directly with the t5 light on you think? Heat mat is on and I spray inside dome but topsoil needs a new mist it’s starting to dry out just a tad.
I never dome my seedlings. I spritz the ProMix around the seedling just to keep it damp. I don’t mist the seedlings, either.
I am unable to get pro mix hp locally so this is what I did. But first a short explanation.
I mixed up my usual soil of FF OF compost, coco perlite and other good stuff. However, this time I added and extra block of coco and vermiculite. It felt good will mixing it. Light and airy which is what I was looking for. I filled a 5 gallon fabric pot with it and watered it down to let it sit. I did not like it. After two days it still held too much water. It also felt dense and compacted below the top 2 inches or so. I think it is a combination of a couple of things. I used a different coco this time. It is much finer than what I used previously resulting in more surface areas for more water retention. Next time back to the other brand. The second is the addition of vermiculite to this mix. Although it has some good benefits it also holds a lot of water and therefore decreased the porosity of the mix and increase water retention.
My solution was to get a 2.2 cu ft bag of Pro Moss (same company that makes Pro Mix HP et al) from a local hardware store. Took 10 gallons of the peat, added 16 qts of perlite, 2 gallons of compost and the other stuff I add. To this mix I added an equal amount of the former mix. Now performing the same test as I did before. It looks promising. It is definitely lighter and more porous. Also, Its runoff ph is 6.4 - 6.6 which I am happy with. Now I hope it performs well.
I have a garage full of soil mixes. What I don’t want for my grows will go in the garden this fall.
