Plant Sexing Tests

has anyone researched the many services out there now for sexing plants? I went down a rabbit hole at one point but didn’t make any notes because I wasn’t ready. I want to drop a bunch of regs but i did last round and week 10 I still don’t :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:'ing know who’s female, though may mean they’re all male. but I don’t want to do this again lol. has anyone looked into this yet and found a good service with reasonable pricing?

I’ve heard good things about farmerfreeman, decent prices (specially if you go for the 10 pack) and fast results.

Take a cutting from each and throw it in labled glass of ph’d water on 12 hour schedule. They should show see in 7-10 days that old.

seems then the problem is you have to wait until they’re old enough to top, right? i usually don’t top until after the 5th or 6th. but you literally just put them in water, no cloner?

@hellraiser, i actually came across them yesterday and emailed if i could drop off… good to know others have used them.

The cutting doesn’t have to be from the top, any lower branch will do, but yes you’d have to wait until you have big enough lower branches to do that as well.

Yes the ol’ cuttings in a cup of water trick, cloner not needed, just need to keep the cuttings alive long enough for them to express their sex, they don’t need to root.

neat, i didn’t know they’d even make it that long just in water.

i’ll have to pay attention to see how long it takes to get a big enough branch. i really want to go from solos into final homes. i did one gallons this time and it’s just too much mess and work for me. though i’ve seen the solo cup challenge and i’ve seen what folks can do :). maybe i’ll start them in solos and if i’m getting impatient or can’t get a good branch in time, i’ll snip a leaf and drop off for testing.

Yeah cuttings can last quite a while in water, specially if you change out the water now and then, they last much longer than the expensive roses I buy my wife. LOL

The whole cutting sex process can take a while which makes the mail in test attractive. I recently started some banana kush seeds and they are coming up on 3 weeks old and their lower branches are just barely big enough to consider using as cuttings for such a test and then gotta wait a week or 2 for the sex to be clearly identifiable. Where as with the mail in test - you cut a piece of leaf from the sprouts, mail them in, and you should have results within a week - a few days for it get there and a couple days to process the test.

all good info, thanks… i’ve never eyed my plants up for that before so young. but i tell ya, i’m on week 9 and no signs of sex yet except out of one and this is insanely frustrating. or… the rest are all boys. which would about fit my luck. the mail was less attractive until i saw these guys were local which takes out some of the sting from our terrible postal service.

I just ordered tests from delta leaf labs. I should be able to know while the plant is still a seedling. Check them out. Just google them.
