I’m not sure how much time I should be waiting before transferring the seedling to the DWC net pots. She sprouted Wednesday.
Can keep in humidity dome until u see roots out of plug. Then into system.
Grows best that way. I have put them directly in system before but root growth is fastest if left until roots are out of plug.
I just checked and she has a few roots sticking out of the cocoa pod. I moved her to my lower chamber with my 600W Veg light. I’m not sure if that is what I should be doing or if I should also be putting her in the DWC at this point.
It’s ok to place in dwc system.
I placed mine into my net pots once i saw root sticking out of the rockwool and started hand feeding them from up top.
Yeah, you can fill the bucket to within an inch of the bottom of the net pot to start. The bubbling will splash some solution on the bottom of the net pot. You should water by hand gently a few times a day until the roots are intobthe solution. Once they are a few inches longer than the depth of the solution remove an inch of solution and then let them drink a bit. Remember to check the solution ph and ec regularly. Not just at time of fill but a couple times a day. Depending on reservoir size, its not a bad idea to empty and replace solution once a week, and make sure you clean out the reservoir because salts fall out of solution after a while. I like to keep my solution 2/3 the depth from the underside of the net pot because that space is reserved for the air root.
I just want to make sure I got this right, if I’m understanding you correctly there should be air between the water of the DWC and the majority of the roots, correct?
Yes that is correct. The roots in a hydroponic system function differently than a soil or soiless sytem. Because they are suspended from the plant and hanging into the solution, the vast majority of the air transfer is done through air roots that the plant produces in that space between the solution and the stalk. They will appear like a white fuzz. Do not underestimate the importance of this area.
Got it. The longer ones will possibly hang into the water, but the fuzz like ones should not be in the water. Thank you for that.
Ok, got the seedling moved. This is day 8. I have the DWC filled to about an inch below the baskets, water PH is at 5.89. So far I haven’t added nutrients. I’m not sure if or when I should and if so, which one exactly. I have heard using cloning nutrients helps promote root growth, which I have. I also moved it under my 600W Viparspectra Bloom/Veg light. I have it about a foot or two from the top the the plant. PIcture below. I’m not sure if I should adjust the height.
Best to cover any open holes to the tub. Light in tub can cause algae and ph problems.
Can start nutes at a very low dose. When I used emerald harvest ( a 2 part grow nutrient ) I used 1ml/gal part a and b for seedlings
Should I also add hydroguard? I’m using General Hydroponics Nutrients if that helps.
I have never actually used hydroguard but I’m sure it can only help.
Maybe someone else can chime in on when to start using hydroguard.
Maybe @kettle might know
i always add hydroguard 2mls per gallon to everything… its a protective bacteria from wiki:
Bacillus amyloliquefaciens is a species of bacterium in the genus Bacillus that is the source of the BamHI restriction enzyme. It also synthesizes a natural [antibiotic]) protein barnase, a widely studied [ribonuclease]) that forms a famously tight complex with its intracellular inhibitor barstar, and [plantazolicin]), an antibiotic with selective activity against *[Bacillus anthracis]
and i dont think there are any negatives to adding it when they are young… it is an amazing species…
I went with about 1 ml. I can always add a little more. As for nutrients, I’m not sure which one I should be using. I have the General Hydroponics variety.
Also, I have a light with dual switches for Bloom and Veg. I’m reading conflicting results, some are saying use Veg only early, then use both, some are saying use both early and then use bloom for flower, some say keep everything on the whole time. Any experience with this?
i dont think the lights you have are the best quality (no offence) so id be doing whatever you think they like then get them both on asap, and leave them on…
All good. You Think I should run both lights? I don’t know if it makes a difference, but I’m only doing one plant.
remember how bright the sun is? well they like full sun…
