Just used filtered water and a bit of the rapid start in the mix.
Changed the water once at the 7 day mark.

Not a stupid question at all.
Yes. As Well. They serve a few other purposes too.
They keep the tips of the rods from poking thru the bags in the wind when they need to be on.
And they seem to help keep the birds from leaving 
all over the plants.
They’ll spin / rattle on the rods to stop them landing.
Rods are used later to tie out to and support branches in bud.

He’s the one got me on using 5 gal blue water bottles. Cut the bottom off. Instant dome.
The bags are a newer thing in the last few years.

All the lil’s are cupped now. Finally.
Fed them all with a light mix. Bout 300 ppm.
Ph was 6.2.
What I like most is 24 cut. 24 rooted.
All I gotta do now is get them thru 1 more week and they’ll move to their final homes at my buddy’s place. 
And the 2 auto northerns. Thinkin tomorrow for their moving day. Supposed to be a bit cooler here so should be a lil bit less heat stress.
95 yesterday. 85-90 forecast for later today.
