So it would be my luck over Christmas that I lose a strip of led in my lighting. Tried to do some research on the issue and came to the conclusion its either a driver or loose wire due to a crappy solder job. @dbrn32 any thoughts on how to fix this? I’m gonna try to call the grow shop i bought it from a couple months back tomorrow. Not seeing a lot of loss about 100-160 umols compared to the other side but it still sucks as im in flower for at least another week. Hoping there is a 1 year warranty if not tho id like to know the next steps to take in repairing
Ill lay money on solder. I work on motherboards as a hobby. Smallest bad ground or resistance can heat bad spot and melt it. Easy fix with a meter and some searching. Unless each light has a driver then driver is working. If all are seperate do the coil test. Switch out to a working driver…problem stays its a short. Lights come on different driver…driver issue
I just don’t want to take the light out of the tent lmao it was such a PITA to get in. I couldn’t find any repair details on it on Google or YouTube . I figured worst case scenario I wait until flower is done and tear into it but I don’t really have anything but a soldering iron so I might need to invest in some more tools if there isn’t a warranty. Just found the receipt I bought it 08/06/2021 so max its ran 1700 hrs
Follow the voltage through the circuit. Start at the driver with a voltage meter and test connections to you lose voltage.
What kinda light is it and i can see if I can fine a wiring diagram online.
Is it under warranty and/or are you handy with diy stuff?
Growers choice roi e720. Don’t have a lot of electrical tools but im sure I could DIY it. Done some controller mods and radio wiring before so I’m sure it isn’t a lot different
Meter is cheap. We seek continuity. When we find the stop…either solder or a new resistor will do it. Parts are cheap. Electronics are marked with color lines on resistors and item code on other parts. Amazon has them all. If the board itself is bad kinda a different beast. Doubt that. The cb used on these lights is straightforward. If running through a built in timer etc then that is second look after you check continuity through board. I can assist if get stuck. Or can call my son. AT working F-18’s atm. A picture of board and he can see problems and shoot test suggestions from a visual.
It’s not a driver or more would be out I believe. Seeing a diagram would really help.
It could be a single chip but I doubt it since the entire stip is out…
Could just be a lose connection but kinda unlikely considering light is I assume pretty stable and just sits still so unlikely something just came lose (but not impossible) .
Just a guess but something shorted or burnt out is more then likely the issue.
That’s what i though it looked like.
I have one of them lights. It does have 2 drives I believe. I will check on line for a diagram and maybe we get lucky but from what I’ve read online. Growers choice has good customers service and mine did come with some kinda manufacturers warranty but I don’t remember what it was as far as how long… But it was at least one year so you may be covered.
Sucks it’s the holiday and no telling when you will get a hold of anyone
But yeah these lights aren’t that complicated.
My money is on connection issue. Solder joint broke, wire pulled out, or something like that. If running 2 drivers then there is multiple strips per driver, but only 1 strip being out says probably not driver.
If it’s under warranty I would seek warranty claim before messing with it. Anything you do could void warranty. If they’re not going to repair or replace i can help you dig into this more. For now I don’t think will harm your plants much.
Yah i agree with you @Storm i think its a dry solder joint my cousins tv had that problem and it wouldnt work they had to rework all the solder joints and it was working again
Well thanks for the recommendations everyone but after talking to the people at the grow shop they said under 1 year is covered by manufacturer warranty. I’ve only had it about 4.5 months so I’m good to go. I emailed the support team at growers choice today and was given a number in case they are replying too slow lol. People at the grow shop said they would send me a new one and then I had to package the old one back up in the box and id be good to go. Glad it’s not a whole light out and just a strip because I can live with that until the new light comes in. For shits and grins tho can yall send me links or pictures of the equipment needed for a light repair so I can have them in the future?
Small screw drivers
Wire cutters
Soldering iron or gun
Solder
Flux
Pliers
Alot of patience and small fingers to hold the small stuff lol.
That’s sweet they r sending u the light and u just return the defective one. Be super sweet if they say don’t worry about returning the old one tho lol. Part or a veg light would be slick huh
I’ve got all that except patience and small fingers. I call my fiance tiny hands lmao anytime im working on cars and can’t reach in a tight spot I yell OOOOOHHHHHH TINNNNNYYYYY HAAANNNNDDDSS and she’s like ugh what can’t get your fat hand back there
I do same with my wife. Hey smalls. Need ur hands mine r too big. Lol. Happens alot on cars now a days.
Every repair is going to be different depending on make, model, and issue you’re trying to repair.
I have built lights from scratch without soldering or needing pliers, so no guarantee this stuff will be required. But it’s certainly possible.
Hey this is an Incase scenario lol. Always need one if ya don’t have it and that only happens because it’s not with u. Lol
They must not be in series? How are the bars next to it working?
They are probably in parallel. But if wiring was in place and this was just a single module failure remaining strips could still work if wired in series.
Well I got my replacement coming in the mail now so I’m set. Thanks for all your help!
Awesome news!
