Is it true that even on a cloudy day the sun is better than a grow light?

#1

I was told that on a cloudy day plants still get plenty of what they need from light

That is correct. Even on a cloudy day, enough ultra-violet radiation hits the earth to where it doesn’t really effect plants at all.

The sun is a truly powerful thing. Most people don’t give it credit for just how powerful it is.
