I do a version of what I think you are saying for my seedlings until they are ready to go into the tent.

I water them with a spray bottle when the wool becomes more dry. There is no water underneath like in a DWC set up.

Yes, If I understand your statement/question; It is common to place a rockwool cube into hydroton (expanded clay).
