How to prune branches to increase yield

From a fellow grower: My question is how to prune the lower branches to increase yield. Where do the buds actually form on the lower part of the plant? Do they grow on the limbs that shoot from the nodes off of the stem on the lower branches? I have looked on the four books that I have, and none of them are clear on just where the lower buds form.

Today’s upper branches are tomorrow’s lower branches, whatever gets shaded too much is considered lower growth, too much shade and bunching causes low bud density, small buds, and bud rot in some cases.

I prune throughout the grow cycle and partly into the flower cycle.
