Occasionally a plant will grow a single flower at the node (the juncture of the leaf and stem) a few weeks prior to the beginning of flowering. This flower is indicative of the plant’s sex. To view it easily, use a small photographer’s loupe or a magnifying glass.

Marijuana generally flowers when it gets a regimen of at least 12 hours of continuous darkness every day. The age or stage of development of the plant is irrelevant. Plants can flower whether they are seedlings or mature plants.
