I’m a newbie to farming in general. I’m doing my first try with the Trainwrecks seeds I bought here. Things seem to be going well so far. I made a mistake with the lights and the watering but things are on track now and I’m going to be switching my vegetative plants into flowering soon. I’ve made some clones that are hanging in there after a couple of days with frequent spraying.
My setup for the plants I’m moving into flowering I’m planning to keep as a flowering set up. They are in a 4x4 Mars tent. I have two HLG 300L Rspec 270w 120 Volt in my tent, a humidifier and two mini fans. I have some space heaters and air conditioner outside the tent for use as needed. @dbrn32 and others were very helpful with ideas for this setup.
What I would like some advice on is making a new setup for the clones when they are in the vegetative state. I’m thinking I may also want a separate setup for a mother plant which I intend to grow from seed. I read the cloning guide by @Hellraiser and decided to follow his map for creating a mother from scratch rather than using one of my soon to be flowering plants.
Currently I’m using a propagator with cuttings in dirt for the clones. I plan to get a cloning machine though as that seems easier. I have a dark closet which is about 4x8 that I will use for the vegetative state plants and the mother plant. The MARS tent I got came with a TSW 2000W Dimmable Light. From what I’ve read on elsewhere on here, that isn’t a great light.
Specifically what I would like to know is, what light would be best for plants in a vegetative state? Should I get a small tent with a separate light for the mother plant? Do I need a separate tent for the cloning machine?
I’d just use the 4x8 closet for vegging plants, mother holding, and cloning - you have plenty of space there. Light up one side a bit brighter for the vegging plants that you’ll be moving into flowering, and the other side doesn’t need a lot of light for the mother or mothers and I’d put the cloning machine in a low light corner as they don’t need much light til after they are rooted. Could use the TSW 2000 for the mother and clones and get something else for the other side, like a HLG Diablo 200 which would be good for vegging a 4x4 area. Vegging plants, mothers, and clones will all do fine with the standard veg light cycles (18/6) so no reason they can’t all be the same space, just lower light intensity for the mothers and clones.
The good thing about rooting clones and vegging plants is that as long as light schedule is long enough they don’t really need any dark. So i wouldn’t buy a tent specifically for these. I do mine on a table in my basement under small led light. Same light i start seeds with actually, and just leave it on 24 hours a day.
If you can visualize how much space you need to cover would be ideal way to start searching for a light.
Not sure where the red came from unless that’s autocorrect? I like to recommend lights from horticulture lighting group. Exactly which one would depend on big of area you plan on needing to light. Is probably not super critical to get a really good light as long as it’s sized properly to the space, but i like to get quality equipment one time and be done with it.
I have 6 cuttings in soil in a propagator right now and they all seem to be hanging in there but I have to spray them down a few times a day. I may not be able give them as much attention in the future so I’m going with the more self sufficient cloning machine.
Yes - increased capacity, a little less noise, and less moving parts (no spinning sprinkler type thing at top of the pump that could stop spinning for some reason). But I got 100% rooting with both systems so really can’t go wrong with either choice.
You can do more than 8 cuttings with the octocloner by sticking 2 cuttings in the collars (one in the middle and one out towards the side). I’ve done 16 clones at a time in the octocloner with no problem.
Yes, that is it but I got Clone King 25 rather than the 36, though I had to cut off the little net pots that the 25 comes with, which is not an issue with the 36, but they are the same (same base) other that the top and number of cloning locations, 25 has net pots (that I cut off), the 36 - more holes a little smaller collars and closer together.
