Hi there
I am totally new to all this and I am currently witing on my grow tent kit and seeds
I will be growing in soil. What type of water to do use? Distilled, tap? Also, do u use peoducts like PH up and Down to regulate the PH? I will be geowing indoors, autos, 4x4x6 grow tent

Hi @Jaxfan68 and welcome! You landed on a great spot. Awesome group of peeps here. I grow in soil (fox farm ocean forest - FFOF) and use tap water. But you need to see what quality water comes out of your faucet. You can purchase a pH/TDS meter and read what your water Total Dissolved Solids reading is. This reading is in ppm -parts per million. Some of the growers here use RO water but everyone here does pH up/down to get to the proper range for the medium they are growing in. For soil the middle of the range is 6.5 I believe. What soil will you be using? Also what nutrients? What lights will you be using? Please please do yourself a favor and don’t buy lights until you get input from the growers here.

Finally professor @Hellraiser will chime in I am sure! Good luck and don’t be afraid of asking questions. Go read some auto grow journals . @Nicky can school you with the autos too

What kind of light will you be running? That is very important for good results, as you seem to have put some thought and money into this. Also, you’ll need a good TDS meter and PH pen. Think about what kind of exhaust you want to run, most of us use inline 6" from AC Infinity with charcoal filters. I throw a few 6" circular fans inside the tent to get the air moving as well. Finally nutrients, you won’t need any for 4 weeks or so (TDS pen will tell you). Do yourself a favor and look into Jack’s 321 on ebay. Cheap, easy to mix and great results.

Welcome to the forum!!

Hi there
I will be using whatever light came with The Budgrower Advanced Kit
Could u recommend a reasonably priced meter? Also, I assume folks are using distilled water to water the plants? There will be 4 maybe 5

Anything Apera or Blue Labs is good quality, I advise not to skimp on PH meter. TDS meter can be cheaper. I got the Apera 20 that does PH only and bought a cheap TDS pen off amazon.

Nope I use regular tap water that I place in 5 gal buckets. I put an aquarium pump and airstone in the water to vent off some of the chemicals. Works for me, but alot of others use RO or distilled. I just took the path of least resistance lol.

Be weary of those lights, majority of the time it will be just enough to get you through veg phase but it will suck in flower. I’ll look into the kit and give you an honest opinion on the light. This is very important for the success of your grow.

@Jaxfan68, is this what you got? Looks pretty good if so. Mars Hydro lights (2 of them) totaling 600 watts.

Hi @Jaxfan68, welcome!

I use RO (reverse osmosis) water as my tap water is pretty horrible. Once you get a TDS meter you can test your tap water and see if it can be used. My tap water is near 500ppm which is not good. If your tap water is below 200ppm I would just use that as it’s a pain having to get RO or distilled water all the time. Another option is to get a RO filter and use that to clean up your tap water if needed.

Yes, proper ph is important, I use ph up and down as needed, also need a decent ph meter - I use the Apera PH20 for ph. I grow in coco coir so I adjust ph of water and nutes to 5.8 (sweet spot for coco), since you’ll be growing in soil you’ll want to adjust ph of water and nutes to 6.5.

I made my own reverse osmosis water because my TDS was reading at 230-ish. Giant PITA! It takes 15-20 minutes per gallon to produce and I was using 4 gallons a day. I bit the bullet after finishing the last grow and sent a water sample off to JR Peters, the manufacturer of Jack’s nutrient line. I got both the water analysis and specific recommendations for using my water with Jack’s. Turns out my water is just fine straight out of the tap. Best $40 I’ve spent in quite a while.
