For making dabs with a heat press, does it matter if you grind your flower first or not or is either way good?
From everything I’ve read or seen on here they use the whole bud to press. Let me tag a few people who use a press @Nicky @Myfriendis410 @AfgVet @Caligurl
I haven’t used a press at all, I just extract with alcohol but I know @kaptain3d has pressed some
I didn’t grind anything when I press… I pre-press (form) a cannabis puck fist, thdn I press that…
You have to make sure you get your temperature right when you start and you can do it either way start out heat low work your way up
@Reed71 can you elaborate.
It depends on size of buds and if you grind it up it will take less heat buds take more heat hope this helps
What heat range do u use? I’m using around 190.
100 most of time different strains more gummie sticky
I’ve only pressed a few times but my friend @Big123 showed me and made me a puck press. Just whole flower pressed into a puck, then pressed to get the final product.
No grinding, make a puck with pollen press before, or just push the buds into a bag and press it.
What temp do you recommend starting with on average?
I had a much better press not grinding. Used a slightly higher temp and pressed longer. Still getting the hang of it.
200 degrees Fahrenheit for 3 minutes, I believe.
I have been sticking with vaporizer and dried flowers to keep my tolerance lower so I have been staying away from the concentrate for a bit.
I am a fan of the Mighty
I have mighty and the volcano!! Love my vape.
Basically for flower I grinding is needed alot use a pre press and press the product into a hard ass clump then press with heat. Pre pressing allows u to have a bit more in the bag at once just make sure to not over pack the pouches lol.
No grinding, it increases the chance for small contaminants to enter the rosin.
Amazon sells a dab press pre press tube, I suggest getting it.
Pressing is an art, each strain will react differently and the amount pressed will alter how to press.
Try pressing 7 grams of flower, weigh it out and be consistent. You should be able to get a gram of rosin back giving you 15% return (can get more but your starting out and it strain dependant)
Constantly press 7g each time and learn that strain, how hot, how long, how much pressure etc.
YouTube bottle tech rosin bags, learn how to fold your bags correctly to avoid rosin pooling in the corners of your bags.
Save your bags in a mason jar in the freezer, when its full learn how to extract the leftovers with mtc oil to make amazing gummies or just use the oil.
As for temp, calibrate your plates or at least use a bbq temp probe to know what your plates are sitting at when the pdi controller says it’s at 200f then write down a cheat sheet of what temp your plates are actually at when your press lies to you.
Start at 200 or 220, with a 1min warm up of the bag on the plates so the flower in the bag lightly touches the plates. Then slowly increase pressure over 2-3min (to much pressure is a common mistake) give it a good max pressure squeeze at the end for a couple seconds the let off.
If your rosin is dark there are a couple reasons for this; most common is Amber tricombs on the bud so don’t sweat it and realize all the Commerical people are harvesting early just to provide the golden honey look, or the flower could be old, or your Temps to high.
Get away from pressing flower asap, make bubble hash or dry shift to press hash.
Thanks, @Nicky ! Great advice on the pressing instructions , getting used to one weight and strain.
Question though… how come you say get away pressing? I like that it’s chemical free and relatively simple to do. What are the pros and cons of the other methods?
@SilvaBack203 has some press experience too I believe.
