Does genetics make a difference even using nutrients?
Please elaborate on your question some. Nutrients won’t effect the genetic programming of a plant, but is a major part of plant health. In certain terms genetics will always matter, in others won’t matter at all.
Genetics always matters. Great genetics with good nutrients = great smoke. BS genetics with good nutrients = BS smoke. You can’t raise a pit bull from a poodle puppy, I don’t care what you feed it.
I had some plants that did great hydroponically then got seeds from a supposedly reputable vendor and never had the same success.
