First time in hydro. What are my leaves trying to tell me?

Any advice is appreciated. First time trying hydro out. Using RDWC with GH Flora Trio. Added some calmag and Southern Ag Garden Friendly Fungicide. Trying to figure what my leaves are telling me. Is it nutrient burn, nutrient deficiency, light issues, or something else? Was also experiencing some purple in the stems that seemed to have improved somewhat. Not sure if everything is related or if that is a separate issue.

Calmag: 2ml/gal (Went lower than manufacturer recommended because of using tap. Wasn’t sure if I even needed calmag or not but I’m open for opinions. Thought calmag deficiency may have been the issue.)

Southern Ag: 1ml/gal
Flora Micro: 2.5ml/gal
Flora Grow: 5ml/gal
Flora Bloom: 2.5ml/gal

Current ppm: 519 (Based off ppm 500 scale)
EC: 1.09
Water Temp: 68
PH: 5.8

Using tap water. Here is some of my current tap analysis before adding anything.

Calcium: 82
Magnesium: 4.4
Iron: 0
Total hardness: 100 ppm
Total dissolved solids: 195ppm

Thank you in advance!

How much of an airgap do you have under your net pot and the nutrients. And also your ppm is a little low. Id raise it up around 850. Its most likely an underfeeding issue.

Also how strong are your airstones pushing bubbles. Oxygen in the root zone is essential to proper nutrient uptake

Welcome @theguyonthecouch to the forum.
I also use the GH Flora line of nutrients. I would suggest adding GH Diamond Nectar. Helps improve nutrient absorption. Adding soil micronutrients that are only present in soil.

How much air to the buckets?

How far below net pot is your liquid?

What is your reservoir temperature?

What lighting is being used and intensity?

As stated your TDS should be in the 800 to 1,000 ppm range with a PH between 5.3 and 5.8.

I aim for a 2 inch gap. I am using a 38 L/min 602 g/hr pump to four 2x2 air stones. Four 5 gallon bucket system plus 5 gallon reservoir. About 16 gallons total in the whole system.

I’m using a 400w led at 23 inches about at the moment. I went beginner friendly and it has veg bloom switches instead of a dimmer. I plan to upgrade the light but at the moment that’s what I have to work with. Reservoir temp is about 68-68 F. I’m running a chiller.

All of that looks okay: just bump your TDS up on nutrient solution and you should be fine. Remember; cal mag first.

Any recommendation on how much ml per gallon to aim for on each nute or what ratio between them to use when hitting ppm targets? Also, I’ve read when using tap only use Cal Mag until you reach 200 PPM and if your tap is already over 200ppm don’t use Cal Mag. Does that sound accurate?

I mix per the grow schedule and adjust using fresh water to hit the TDS I’m targeting. You can dispense with cal mag if you want but I’d watch for signs of deficiency. I would also suggest adding silica to your mix. Silica is always added first, then cal mag then base nutes. Shoot for 900 ppm.

I picked up some silica and the diamond nectar. I know you add the silica first but do you add the diamond nectar before the base nutes as well?

Yes, add the silica and calcium/magnesium firsts. Then the micro and base nutrients. Do any pH balancing then the Beneficial Microbes.

Im what order do you add the Diamond Nectar?

Add the Diamond Nectar after Silica and CaliMagic. Before base nutrients.
Always finish by balancing pH.
After pH is right add your Beneficial Microbes last.

Thank you very much. I appreciate it.

Another thing I do is freeze a couple 2 liter plastic cola bottles in advance. Then drop one frozen bottle per 5 gallon bucket of water 12 hours before to chill my water to about 62F. That way my water is prepped at 62F before I mix my nutrient. Or even if you aren’t using nutrients.

Note: NPK RAW Silica can be added in any order and will not cause pH swings since it is Inert.

That stuff is kinda expensive.

Npk raw silica? Its like 13$ to treat up to 800 gallons

Where do you get yours? It’s the same stuff in GH Armor Si.
