Fabric pot question

I am planning my summer grow and want to use 5 gallon fabric pots. My grow last year was directly in the ground and towards the end around early October they weren’t getting enough sun. Do roots grow out of bottom of these? I want to be able to move them around.

. I set mine on a couple of bricks.

If you are growing photo-periods consider going to 7 gallon containers. @butchbrooks

@butchbrooks

No the roots will not grow through the bottom.
I grew using them last year and had no problems.

If you dug a hole maybe they would root outside the fabric so placing them on a concrete block is a good idea.

I applaud your desire to be free to move them around. Yours is only one of many reasons to keep them in pots, even outside.

Thanks for the info. They took forever to finish last year. About 75 days in flower. They were a sativa.

I would consider the 7 gallon size that @bob31 mentioned as a minimum. You could easily go larger. Many people use up to 30 gallon sizes.

I used 3 gallon fabric pots indoors for my scrog of photo strains and I’m definitely sizing up next time. On top of that, outdoors is a much huger ball game.

I guess I will use 10 gallon for photos and 5 for the autos. Thanks everyone.

I checked out his grow journal. Very nice. I need to keep mine stealthy as possible though. Prefer 6 ft. and under.

@butchbrooks Just a side comment, I grew a lot of my garden in 20 gal fabric pots and it worked great. Later in the fall, I could move them around, with help, to get maximum sun exposure.

All my cannabis is in fabric now and I love them. The root ball is unbelievable.

The reason the roots do not grow out of the fabric is called air pruning. The root stops growing when it hits air and the stalk sends out a new root to augment it. That is why they get so compact inside the pots.

Good luck on your grow. Jerry

Hi Jerry,
I was wondering about the weight of the 20 gallon pots you use, are they very difficult to move ? as I am the only source of trusted labour, sadly.
I have a greenhouse / conservatory on the 1st floor of my house and I am concerned about putting any serious stress on my joists.
I have me 5x Afghani and 5x Hindu Kush Autos ready to go into my fabric bags 2x days before the next full moon.
I grow with organic soil, sunshine and plant by lunar calendar and apart from the occasional attacks of autumn grey mould on my Auto Northern Lights I have had 100% success rates of germination and produce excellent herb and therefore I am looking forward to this seasons grow with fabric pots and the effects of air pruning, thank you for the great information.

Good Growing and Good Life to you
