EC and TDS question

Reading up and I am a bit confused on EC and TDS. Is it the same thing. Or to be clear - do you track one or the other or both? Everything I see has a conversion chart from one to the other. The meter I got reads both but if it is the same, what is the most commonly used?

sorry for the ignorant question.

Most people seem to track PPM now and days. It’s an easier to follow trail I believe.
EC is electrical conductivity which is directly related to the PPM of the total dissolved solids present in the solution.
Of course RO and distilled have no PPM or Ph as they are pure water sources so to accurately Ph those you must add something first. Any reading you get before that won’t be accurate.

Hey @Tylersays I tried to track both at first but all you need to know is one to get things right. My General Hydroponics feeding schedule uses PPM so I use the total dissolved solids measurement.
I use rain water and after running it through a five stage carbon filter the TDS comes in around 22ppm with 6.7pH.
