Something I’ve noticed in recent years is some crazy exaggerating of smells and taste of Strains.
An example just made up but pretty close to some I’ve seen. “Smells like passion fruit Skittles with a hint of mango and pepperoni pizza with a insert whatever other random thing” Taste can be described as “meatball sub with hints of and yadda yadda”.
I’ve been around marijuana for a long long time can we all be for real and agree this is mainly just a weird marketing gimmick? For one smoking it well smoke typically taste like smoke…vaping it or dabbing you coupe make the argument for some flavor but to say you are smoking pot and it taste like Skittles etc seriously?
If we take Sommeliers for instance in comparison. There are a small handful ( couple hundred) in the entire world that can actually break down the flavors in wine.
Even then plenty of people have been scammed or have scammed due to the difficult nature of telling these flavors and smells apart etc.
Just something I’ve noticed that seemed weird to me. I get it, cannabis is a huge market and it is good marketing but I mean seriously lol
It isn’t. A strain’s unique smells are due to each strain’s unique terpine profile.
While I get that to an extent. If I take 2 different strains with 2 different terpene profiles and people didn’t know what is what. If I did a blind smell / taste test 99% of people would say pine ( because almost all strains have pine smell) and maybe something else but I’ve never seen anyone say anywhere close to these descriptions lol
Also I have 3 blue dream plants and guess what they smell like pine not mango lol
I agree. No two people perceive things the same so while I might smell banana you may smell grapes.
Added to the fact we see loads of people who ask why their plants all look different when they come from the same pack of seeds we can assume smell will vary as well.
I read a controversial article last year that stated even the Sativa Indica ideas may be totally imagined and that cannabis simply has differing qualities within the entire genetic makeup. It said too that all the specific strains we think are different are not. It said breeders simply work with plants that have certain effects and when they stabilize a set with the stated effects of Blue Dream for example, that they label it blue dream and sell it as such. To think that we have a clean line of lineage to old landrace strains is unclear. Nobody kept records of illegal growing. So we have what we have.
All of this I just stated is from what I have researched and does not reflect my beliefs so please dont bash me…too much. I can take some bashing. The wife gives me practice…LOL
Lol fair enough and I’m not trying to say nobody gets those things but typically speaking I’ve never seen anyone who really thought that. Either way it has led me to looking more into terpenes than I had before.
It’s an interesting hobby / area to learn. So much information, disinformation and science to learn all the stuff there is to learn about Cannabis. Since growing this grow I have jumped head first into researching and I can always find something new
I get what you are saying about the names and what they conjure up in your mind.
I get different smells/tastes from each strain I grow and you should be too…
But do you get actual fruit or food flavors? I mean I’ve had and my wife / friends have had slightly different “flavors” but never to the point anyone could say oh this is blueberry or watermelon etc etc
My wife swears that Granddaddy Purple tastes just like a Fried Egg Sandwich.
Who am I to argue.
Lol fair enough
I just figured it would be interesting to see what people said and if I am wrong and just have had the wrong weed and friends
I would say sweet smell for what most think of their fruit…no I don’t get food flavors
My wife is an Executive Chef with an advanced degree in culinary arts. She has worked at the Waldorf Astoria, the Omni, and is currently the Director of operations for another well-known (she won’t let me say) she SWEARS I’m growing lemon trees in the basement! My grow room smells like citrus. Don’t know why and don’t know how but it’s AWESOME! I’m on my 3rd grow of Super lemon haze.
I smoked some bubblegum that tasted exactly like wrigleys chew. Exactly like it! Cat piss strain smells very much like cat piss. I have smoked blueberry yum yum tasted just like a blueberry pie.
I agree though, there is alot of hype about smells.
That’s funny because I had a lemon tree in the yard where I grew up and I loved to break open a leaf and smell it. It is very similar to ripening buds. Flashback city!
Weird but true, i like to put my face in the leaves
Try vaping the herb @GrowingIs4Everyone. I used to smoke until one of the aussies clued me in on vaping flowers. That’s when I really noticed the different tastes of strains. I’m vaping Blue Cheese I just cured and it does not taste or smell like Blue Cheese to me…kinda earthy and sweet. You can get a fruity taste from some strains. I think Grand Daddy purple tastes fruity when vaping. Northern lights tastes like pine and lemons. To me all the weed I grow smells skunky while growing.
Definitely will! I make my own extracts!
Interesting topic @GrowingIs4Everyone, I think there is a bit of hype surrounding the subject. Does it get me high, and how long does it keep me high? Do I have energy and motivation or am I a slug? Does it help my creative thought process or do I zone out? These are the main factors in what I like.
That being said I don’t like the smell of a literal skunk. We have too many of em around here and our pets have been sprayed too many times. So any weed that smells skunk or pissy is not my cup of tea. Fell in love with the Amnesia Haze, it checks all the boxes. I would say it has a slight citrus smell, but its probably my imagination. Chocolope is kind of unique IMHO, Cant say why she just seems a little different. She grows different than the others,
This year I grew a G 13 for the first time, never smoked any as far as I know. Week 8, Its almost done, and the smell is fabulous. I don’t even know how to describe it, but the smell vaguely reminds me of something like we would smoke 40+ years ago. Again it could be me succumbing to the marketing. I cant wait to cure it in glass jars for a few months.
