Can I move the dirt around at the top?

A question of a fellow grower: Is it ok to move the dirt around at the top of the plant (even if vail rooted at the top) ?

As my plants grow the soil becomes hard so i take a small hand garden rake & gently break up top soil. This helps in watering process .

I’ve noticed when this happens if I take a spray bottle of water and spray the top of the soil and let it sit for a few minutes and it will soften up the top dirt and allow it to absorb the feeding instead of running off the top and down the sides
