Yes, yes, sorry. I thought we were discussing (in part) the water level difference between the reservoir and the buckets. My point on that was that it doesn’t require a 3" return to effectively drain the buckets to approximately the level of the reservoir (esp. when they’re fed with 3/4" & 700gph).

That’s the principle or theory right there bro. But yes, 3/4" or even 1/2" supply line to the buckets/stations, via a 700 gph or bigger pump, is what regulates the flow of the whole system.
I’ve seen systems that had 12, 13 gallon buckets on it, fed by a 2550 gph pump via 1 1/2" PVC to each bucket, and used the 3" PVC for a quicker return. You need to circulate the nutrient solution through the whole system (each bucket/station) at least 7 times per hour. Once again, regulated by the pump.
