Breeding help...I’m lost

I can’t wrap my head around this.
I crossed plant x with plant y…
I have seeds from the crossed plant from x and y(let’s say z)…
Plant z has a 1 male and 9 females…
I take the male from plant z and cross it back to female x…
Can I take the seeds from that and cross it back to the top female plant from z?

Sounds crazy but I think I worded that right

I lab testing the top 3 plants from z but don’t know if I can cross it back between x and z

@TXCanna you have a good handle on vigor. You’d probably know. @PurpNGold74 is also knowledgeable in breeding.

I would take plant z and breed a male and a female from plant z call it plant w. Grow two of those seeds from w and breed them. Take a clone from female of plant w prior to harvesting seeds. Then grow plant w seeds taking a male and crossing it back into the female w clone.

So you have taken plant z’s genetics and strengthened them to get a more consistent version of z through selective inbreeding.

I like this idea. I just don’t want to stray away to far from the original mother. I’m going to try this

To strengthen z you need a mother to save from z.

Okay this makes sense to me. So I can stray away from the original x and y so fast?

Crossing back into x is going to strengthen x in z. To strengthen the hybrid z you made you would want to breed z taking a female clone from z’s breeding. That would be your F1 clone. Hybrid vigor comes from your F1 generation only. So z becomes w. Then take w and breed it. Then take a male from w breeding and breed it back into your F1 clone. That would strengthen your original hybrid. Then the mother you would save would be your F1 clone. @PurpNGold74 come check me
