Hi, so I planted my first seeds 2 days ago and they are growing really fast, already about 2” out of the soil, my question is when is the plant supposed to shed the seed cause it still has it on like a cap, I’ll include a picture.
Helmet Head
Put a drop of water (or spit) on it and wait a minute.
Take tweezers or toothpicks and Very Gently remove it. try not to pull up the plant as its not rooted well yet. If moist it should slide off pretty easy. The seedling will open up on its own. Make sure you get the papery husk too. Its super thin like rice paper.
Drop of water to help it, may need tweezers to pull it. If the membrane stays on you can ever so carefully snip it between the cotes leaves, if you have real fine scissors and a darn steady hand.
Let us know how it works out please
Worked great got the cap off of one and loosened it on the other cause it wasn’t ready and the one I loosened is already breaking through 3 hours later
I took a video to show u and ask if it looked good but it won’t let me upload it on here
YOU GOT THIS!
For real, my very first grow happened to me too. My woman dubbed the plant “Helmet Head Huey”. She was the biggest of the bunch at harvest.
Keep us updated!
My first grow currently in process of I had one do this. I lightly helped peel it off and she was fine ever since.
I got it this plant is growing insanely fast put it in water 3days away and it’s already 3” tall
@Hairybadger231 , you want to water out away from the stem 2-3” or so. This will make the roots seek water. I’m talking eye dropper amounts. They will die from “damping off” if you give them too much. Roots need oxygen. You can drown them! Many use 1/2 of a plastic soda bottle and just spritz the inside with water so as not to give too much.
Should I be waterting once a day at this stage are enough to water every 2 days? Yesterday they split a little less than a litter of water(so they both got a little less than half) and they are about 6” tall now and about triple the size since those pics I posted, I feel like they are growing crazy fast. I gave them that water yesterday before bed and they already seem kinda dry
Can you post a pic?
If you are talking about your sprouts it sounds like they need more light.
Yep. More light needed.
You can add soil so that about an inch remains above soil line and it will just grow more roots from the buried part.
How far should my light be and how to tell I need more?
See how they are shriveling toward the base of the stem? Looks like way too much water, damping off. Very common mistake. I learned it 10 years ago the hard way. A few spritz inside a plastic dome is enough for the first week or so.
What make and model light?
I have to take off for a bit but someone else will answer im sure.
They don’t need much light at first. And as @Spiney_norman said depends on the light. You can veg them with just a place by the widow or a CFL or 2. But as they grow they typically need @100+ W draw from the wall socket per plant.
