Will this adequately cover a 5’x5’ tent, or would I be better off going with 2x 288s and separating them with a little space?

I don’t know the answer, but if your electricity is as expensive as mine, then the energy efficiency would be a factor. Two lights instead of one also has the benefit of redundancy in case one fails, but if you already have a light then that could be your backup.
I would go with 2 260 XL kits over a 550 same thing less cost i do believe an will be better for different canopy heights

Ideally three of the 260 xl kits would be your best option. If you can’t do that, I would look at two of them and Pete adding third later.
