Lower leaves turn yellow and fall off

i have a “big bud” plant. i germinated it 1/25/16, and transplanted it to a 5 gal pot on 3/27/16 and it was 15.5 inches tall. i veged it with 24 hour lighting and limited fert. i used a mix of 50% promix; 35% perlite; and 15% vermiculite. i’m not sure when it started flowering but, when i realized it was producing buds i put it on 12/12 lighting… it now has some good sized buds on top and alot of little ones on bottom. my problem is that the lower leaves are turning yellow; shriveling up and falling off. i haven’t tested the soil but, it hasn’t gotten a lot of nitrogen for some time. i have been watering it lately with a mild mix of 7-12-12 liquid fert. it has always been indoors under pretty ggod lighting ; temp./humid levels.
is the above condition normal considering the age; i.e., is it just dying as part of a normal life cycle. what can i do to get those small flowers to become nice big buds/
i can’t seem to get “watering” down. the soil (promix) usually seems damp and my moisture meter almost always reads “damp”. so, i haven’t been watering it a lot but, i have been watering it when the top 1 to 1.5 inches seem very dry.
so, i don’t want it to mature and die with all those small flower/potential buds.
what do i need to do to stop the bottom vegetation from dying and get those small flowers to grow into nice big buds thanks.

The bottom leaves turn yellow first due to nutrient deficiency normally at the end of a grow. You are feeding it bud food which is low on what leaves need to grow. This is ok. If you want to have uniform buds you have to Scrog or lst to balance the light to all bud sites.

If the bigger buds are ripe enough, you can clip those and get your lights closer to the smaller buds for a couple more weeks. If not you can add some lighting to get to the lower buds.

If they are starting to turn Amber, your almost ready. 25% amber should be ready, many people like them earlier, or later.

thank you, blountville

i have not been successful in finding trichomes even with magnifying glass. i just haven’t seen anything that kinda looks like a pistil with a bulb of resin on the top - not even down deep in the buds.

That’s odd, could you show a picture possibly?

thank you stomper. what is scrog.

Scrog is “Screen of Green” . It is a horizontal trellis placed above one or more plants to help spread out the branches. The result is many more top branches and top buds that grow a uniform height. Easier to light and tend.

I have one going now …

Give it a look.

I would like to get in touch with @stomper

How can I help @mtbox2?

@stomper,

You wanted me to send pics but not been able to respond in forum.just need some pointers. These pics are 3 weeks ago.

@mtbox2

Current pics not looking goodnext email

@stomper,

current pics, showing different concern.

@mtbox2

You definitely have nute problems. I would start by testing your ph. For soil it should be 6.3 to 6.8 in the water going in and coming out. @garrigan62 is a good one to ask about this kind of thing.

@mtbox2,

Welcome to ILGM we are all here to help you and that Thank You Sir.

Nutrient Burn

I recommend not feeding more than 1 time a week if using ½ teaspoon per gallon of water for chemical nutrients. You can feed every other day,( this goes for chemical and organics) at very weak amounts, but doing this may contribute to over watering, and for that I do not recommend feeding more than once a week. Some people feed 2 times a week using like ¼ teaspoon per gallon of water… Use 1/4 strength for first feeding and then go up to 1/2 strength from the 2nd feeding when using chemical nutrients. It’s very easy to overdo it. When using organics, depending on which one you’re using, I recommend using 1 teaspoon per gallon of water. When the plant gets bigger you can work your way up to using more nutrients when the plants get bigger.

As for soil mixtures, there are a lot of different kinds of soil’s out there. Using a rich soil mixture is not recommended for seedlings. Seedlings that are under 2 weeks of age you do not want to start them in rich soil, using a seed starter mixture is one of the safer ways. Seed starter mixtures are weak in nutrients, so it will not burn the seedlings but will provide them enough to get past seedling stage, but the downside is you have to transplant into a better soil mixture after 2 weeks of age. If you decide to start with this mixture, do not put your seedlings into a big pot. Start them out with using a cup or a small pot.

Nutrient Burn causes leaf tips to appear yellow or burnt. They can also be brown and twisted and crispy looking. Depending on the severity it can show many different symptoms and shows on lower part of the plant when its young, at older stages it can move anywhere on the plant.

To fix the problem when you have Nutrient burn, you want to flush out the plants with lots of water.

Soil

Soil should be flushed with lots of water, Use 3 gallons of water per one gallon of soil. Flush very thoroughly, after plant recovers usually after a week, you can resume using nutrients after a week or a week 1/2. When you flush your soil, you flush everything out, a lot of nutrients go with it, including the soil nutriens nute burn! Stop this by not adding to much chemical/organic nutrients to your water,foliar feeding. DONT feed more than 1 time a week unless using weak amount, use 1/4 strength for first feeding and then go up to 1/2 strength from then on when using chemical nutrients. Its very easy to overdo it. Causes leaf tips to appear yellow or burnt. NEVER give nutrients to plants that are under 2 weeks of age, at this age the soil nutrients are enough to suppliment them untill 2 weeks of age or more depending on how good your soil is. Using ferts before 2 weeks will almost likley kill your plants.

I hope this helps

Will.

I have not fed the plants at all until a couple of days ago and that was with cactus 2-7-7.I will flush. did you use current pic@mtbox2
