Collecting Rainwater May Be Illegal!?

How ridiculous is it that collecting rainwater is illegal in some USA states. Geesh. MA is still okay but I thought I’d post a site that has a list, state by state.

What the hell how stupid @Matthew420
And what I read it’s just another reason not to live in a gated community or one with an association :+1:
At least I’d never buy a house in one nobody is going to tell me what to do on my land :rage:
I’m glad NY still allows it and according to the link they encourage it :+1::v::sunglasses:

Seems kinda silly to me, especially where people have droughts.

I agree but I’m guessing if your in a drought your not harvesting to much rain water :sweat_drops: lol
Just joking bro
for sure it makes no sense at all except as a $ generator for the local government :+1:

Our state encourages us to keep as much water as possible luckily I have 555 gallon drum’s of rainwater in hell I’d be broke if I had to pay a fine for how much water I have

Me too. Thought I’d share in case anyone needed to move their collections to the backyard. Something stupid like rainwater could get authorities into your yard.

Even if I was not allowed to I still would they can kiss my butt it’s keeping water drainage from going into the sewer and you know people in the chemicals they use in their yard it just washes that stuff directly into the sewer and people drink no thank you that’s why I keep five Gallon jugs of water to put in my water machine for drinking

I lived in a hoa community that for 85 bucks had a maintenance guy bring a rain barrel to your place and hooked it up to the downspout for you . They even went to 65 for a second barrel if you wanted two

Great subject @Matthew420 :+1:

It’s totally ridiculous for collecting water rain to be illegal, the only reason that I see to regulate it is a puplic health one and responsible setting like @Hogmaster make my point that is to prevent sponding site for insects propagation of malaria and zika like disease by carefuly made a setting that help prevent it… good job Hogmaster :+1:

OK since not from the states, why the hell would they do that ,or is there poison in the waters, here we have 20,000litter’s tanks and bigger to collect rain water at homes, the government here wants each house to have tank’s ,they even had a rebate if you did get one , in drought tanks are the only way you can water gardens.

Might be a concern to have standing water attracting insects. It could have something to do with they feel water from roofs is better in sewage where it can be treated vs being poured into the earth?

I don’t agree with any of these, btw. Seems pretty dumb but I live in the sticks sorta. Maybe big cities are the concern? Who the hell knows.

Who’d of thought the great state of Massachusetts would allow us to get free water and smoke pot.

And other places you can’t do either.

This world done gone plum crazy!

It’s like the bizzarro Seinfeld where everything is the opposite!

When I’m on my property, all I have is rain water to do everything with ,including cooking and drinking, all I do is out these tablets in the water once s month and that keeps the insect’s out and keeps it safe for drinking .I lived on the property for 10 year’s , and if my partner would leave here ,we would be on the property, 12acres of rainforest.

Well I collect mine in 5 gal. Bucket when it supposed to rain and then pour in gallon jugs so it would be hard for anybody to prove its rain water… Most jugs are water jugs lol…

Only in the good old U.S.A

Here is thee other side.
If i lived in an area where there were epidemics of malaria, encephalitis, Zika, dengue or other mosquito borne illnesses. I would want the law.
Say for instance- My next door neighbor kept rain barrels that were open to pests. And after talking with him he doesn’t care what concerns I had. If I thought the mosquitoes that were nailing my kids and possibly carry a debilitating life long illness were using his rain barrels as their nursery. I would then have a very serious problem and so would he…
I am much more concerned about them leasing or letting my chosen source of drinking water an artesian spring that’s on public land go private. And privatization of public wealth seems to be current in today’s political arena at least here in the states. They might allow catch barrels if they start aerial spraying entire neighborhoods with DDT again.

I use 2 IBC food grade totes fed by a flexible downspout off the south side of my standing seam steel garage roof. Their intake is covered with 2 layers of mosquito screen and they remain capped when it’s not raining. I loosen the cap as a vent whenever I draw from the bottom valve with my 1/2HP irrigation pump. As soon as I’m done watering, I snug it down again. Ice dams removed the gutter from the garage in a not so gentle way so I need to redesign it to be removed and stored safely away at the end of fall. I just empty the tanks before the last freeze and leave them outside out of the direct sun.

Sounds better than my 5-gal bucket that I lug down to the basement to fill a plastic garbage barrel
