Canister filter?

Is anyone running a aquarium canister filter with UV on their RDWC system?

I was considering this …

what do you mean ??? RDWC ??? and yes uv is ok to use but if your adding beneficial microbs to your water the UV will kill them

Recirculating Deep Water Culture. I’ve heard that UV can precipitate certain elements out of solution and should be added back.

No beneficial bacteria intentionally added to this system and only mechanical and UV filters in the canister.

Just a quick word on the UV.

It definitely does cause issues with iron. I had to shut the UV light off.

Curious, why would you want to use a filter?

Originally tried the UVc for sterilization… Fail.

Now just to remove root debris from the system to avoid any clogged pumps/lines. Maybe try bennies in the future.

I’m not sure putting a bio-filter on a system that’s promoting sterility is a good idea. Hydroponics systems are notorious on the belief that production of bacteria is a negative thing. The only time you do hear about it, is to deal with more of it (root rot). Even then, most of the time, people try to kill it (H2O2).

Putting a filter that holds bacterial matter long term, might not be the path I’d promote.

I’m running it now. We’ll see… I know it’s been running in perfect balance thus far.

@GreenMachine,

Hey bud, how fare thee, filter?

Is it working out?

It’s doing its job. Just finished a grow and it kept any root debris out of my water lines/pumps. I also have some media in the filter to grow some bennies.

@kabongster @bob31 @Brian091180 @peachfuzz just reviving topic for some guys off hand which dabble in DWC since I was considering a bio filter to keep benificial bacteria thriving between res changes making expensive microbe products like great white Voodoo juice etc. Needed at smaller dose during res changes. If in theory you can keep colony alive and managed through entire grow using only 1 time you get all the benefits of good bacteria while adding far less to system. In hydro we fight off bacteria to keep roots healthy there are 2 leading theories on this 1 being sterile is perfect and the other being if good outnumber bad they always have advantage

I don’t brew any beneficial teas, but can a strain be kept active in an aerated tea?

so long as it’s fed it stays healthy bio media filters are used in fish tanks all the time and i always think back to if it works for fish??? Good bacteria feed off dead or diseased organic matter fish sht dead roots algae slime etc and help break down some minerals which many products we buy are used for.
So consider in theory only buying a microbe in smallest cheapest volume and having it thrive in your system for months without need to add again or little need of full strength doses because your culture will grow rather than being flushed out every change?

just some food for thought Mammoth P Voodoo Juice Subculture’s MB Tarrantula and Orca Great White all these products use fungi and bacteria and we are supposed to add every change? Bacteria has proven time and time again to help plants all I am posing is helping it stay alive in system

Since I personally grow sterile I am curious what results others have found with addition of microbes

I use a 400 gallon aquarium canister filter with no UV in a 110 gallon RDWC with a 1/2 hp chiller keeping everything 67 degrees. I add Dr. Tims waste away , and Barley straw extract to keep things clean then Hydroguard, Terrantula, Piranha, Voodoo Juice. for roots. I will use 1 tank for veg, increasing the ppm over time with top up solution, only change the tank when the food mix changes. Never have to clean my airstones at all and they are spotless at finish. Definetly worth it, but never tried sterile.
